The Global Security Initiative (GSI) is an organization that aims to provide students with access to opportunities in the fields of strategic studies and international affairs. At present we intend to do so by providing a platform for students to publish high quality coursework and original research, analysis and opinions. Additionally, we also aim to foster a community of early-career scholars and practitioners to encourage intra and inter-disciplinary collaboration. Who we are:
Shiva Shah
Director, General
As the General Director of the organization, Shiva is responsible for coordinating content and publishing efforts with Public Relations and Operations. He is currently pursuing a bachelors in International Security Studies and mathematics, and Masters in Strategic Studies. He has previously gained experience working in the the areas of Financial Technology and Information Services. He is primarily interested in how surveillance, dual use technologies are shaping contemporary security issues.
Brendan Wong
Director, Operations and PR
As the director of Operations and Public relations, Brendan is Primarily responsible for managing GSI’s relationships with its audience and partners. He is currently pursuing a Bachelors in International Security Studies and Business Administration. Brendan has previously gained experience working in the areas of Business Development, Account Management and Marketing. He is interested in the areas of arms procurement, Security in the Asia-Pacific and Hybrid Warfare
Zachary Horsington
Director, Content and Publishing
As the director of Content and Publishing, Zac is responsible sourcing and ensuring the quality and standards of the content published by GSI. He is currently pursuing a Bachelors in International Security Studies and has previously gained experience working in the areas of Geo-spatial Intelligence and Maritime Risk Management. Zac is primarily interested in the areas of Military Technology, Maritime Strategy and Counterinsurgency Doctrine
Benjamin Lapping
Editor and Community Manager
In addition to Ben’s editorial duties he also assists in the facilitation of GSI’s events and on campus activities. He is currently pursuing a Bachelors in International Security Studies and a Bachelor of Arts. With majors in History and minors in Philosophy, Political Science and Historical International Security. His primarily interests lie in the areas of automation in public policy and the philosophy of democracy. Ben hopes to somehow make the world a better place.
Assad Asil Companioni
Editor
As an editor Assad is responsible for ensuring the quality and standards of the content published by GSI. With a background in International Relations, he will now be pursing a master’s degree in Migration Studies, where his research focus will likely be on climate-induced migration, as well as the broader area of human development with regard to migrants and their host societies. His previous academic experience was primarily in critical theory, broadly defined.
